Happiness is a Warm Gun

This past weekend was the Overland Park, KS gun and knife show, just the thing to keep at bay the looming depression that hunting season is still four months away. It was a great mix of exhibitors, with established gun stores in KS and MO, as well as individuals selling off private collections. The show was well attended, which also made for Grade A people watching.

I didn’t go with the intent of buying anything, but I knew I probably would, and I did. Maybe it’s the same mindset a woman has when walking into a Nordstrom. I will say that I was keeping my eyes open for Randall knives. This is a small outfit in Orlando that only produces hand-made knives, and they are works of art. I’ve dropped in at the little shop several times, and they’ve always been kind. I started collecting them in the mid-1990’s and now have five, and their value has skyrocketed. The current wait time if you order from the shop is 5 years, due to their extreme popularity and the fact that Randall commits to fulfilling orders for active military first. I didn’t see any Randall knives at the show, which was not surprising. Why would someone want to sell one, unless they were desperate for cash?

I did fall in love with, and bought, a used Marlin bolt-action .22 caliber rifle. It cost $135 and it’s in very good shape. I’ve never owned a rifle, as my hunting gravitates toward shot-gunning for feathered quarry, but I’ve often thought it would be fun to have a gun for rabbits. The purchase was also good news to my bird dog that prefers hunting rabbits anyway, and rabbit season is open all year in Kansas. Now the prospect of making my own rabbit sausage is quickly becoming a reality.

I’ve read that gun sales are significantly up this year, and it feels good to contribute to the trend. It feels even better to know I don’t have to wait until November now to go hunting.
